This troubleshooting guide is intended to help users of the Melco EDS system get their software operating correctly in their computer. It is not intended to teach users how to operate the program. If you need help with the operation of the EDS program please refer to the EDS/Epicor Users Guide.

UNABLE TO START EDS - LESS THAN 2 MEG ON THE HARD DRIVE:

This message comes up on the screen when the hard drive is nearly full.

  1. From the C:\EDS> prompt, type the following:
  2. DEL *.ASD <Enter>
  3. DEL *.HSV <Enter>
  4. DEL *.PFD <Enter>
  5. DEL *.MEM
  6. DEL *. <Enter>
  7. CHKDSK/F <Enter> (Answer NO to lost allocation units, do not convert to files). If running DOS 6.0 or higher run Scandisk instead of CHKDSK/F.
  8. A complete listing and description of these steps are listed in chapter 11 of your EDS Operators Manual.

COMPUTER REBOOTS AFTER STARTING EDS:

  1. After the computer boots and beeps, press CTRL and C. You will get a message asking if you want to terminate the batch job - Answer (Y) Yes.
  2. Type the following: CD\EDS <Enter>
  3. Type MEM <Enter> and verify that the Largest Executable Program Size is at least 570K. If it is less than 570K, run MEMMAKER to increase available memory.
  4. Do a directory of the hard drive by typing DIR <Enter>; there should be at least 2 MEG free on the hard drive. If there is less than 2 MEG free follow the above procedures for Unable to Start EDS.
  5. Do another directory if there is over 2 MEG free on the hard drive type EDS <Enter>.
  6. If the system still reboots search the hard drive for DSGNPARM.CFG. Delete all of them.
  7. If you have a Keymake disk install it.
  8. If computer continues to reboot after this, contact your distributor. The Melco network / security board may have to be replaced.

CURSOR BLINKS ON A BLANK SCREEN AFTER "ECHO OFF" WHEN TRYING TO RUN EDS:

  1. From a DOS prompt type MEM <Enter>.
  2. The Largest Executable Program Size (Free Conventional Memory) must exceed 570K
  3. If it does not exceed 570kb and you are running DOS 6.0 and above, from a DOS prompt type MEMMAKER <Enter>.
  4. Choose the EXPRESS method. Answer NO to programs that require expanded memory.
  5. From a C:\EDS> prompt type in EDSCFG. Make sure line 5 is set correctly. If a Stargate board is installed the value should be 0 or 2.
  6. You may be trying to use a copy of EDS that is not designed to run on your video card. Verify that you are using the latest copy of the program you received. If not re-install the latest copy.

"FLOATING POINT" OR "RUN TIME" ERROR WHEN BOOTING EDS2:

  1. Exit the EDS program to the C:\EDS> prompt.
  2. Type: DEL DSGNPARM.CFG and <Enter>.
  3. Restart the EDS program.

    WINDOWS 95 OR 98 WON’T OPEN AFTER USING EDS2:
  1. Melco recommends making a backup copy of your Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files. If you have copy of these files copy them back onto the hard drive root directory and reboot the computer. If you don’t have a copy of these files perform the following steps..
  2. Exit EDS to DOS. Type in CD\ <enter>
  3. Type in Rename Config.sys Config.mel <enter>
  4. Type in Rename Autoexec.bat Autoexec.mel <enter>
  5. Reboot the computer.

COMPUTER RUNS SLOW:

  1. If your computer has a Turbo button, make sure it is turned on.
  2. If you are running DOS 6.0 or above you can run DEFRAG from a DOS prompt. If not you can run a maintenance program such as Norton's Utilities Speed Disk, or PC Tools Compress to un-fragment the hard drive.
  3. Complete steps for Unable to Start EDS to free up hard drive space.

CANNOT READ FROM FLOPPY DRIVE:

  1. Remove and re-insert the disk and try again.
  2. If you still have a problem try another disk, you may have a bad disk.
  3. The disk drive may need to be cleaned. Get a diskette head cleaner.
  4. If still a problem, the floppy drive may be defective and need replacement.
  5. Contact a local computer technician for further assistance.

PROBLEMS WRITING FILES TO THE HARD DRIVE:

  1. Exit the EDS program to DOS and type DIR and <Enter>.
  2. If you have less than 2 MEG free follow the instructions under "Unable to Start EDS".
  3. After running Unable to Start EDS, type DIR and <Enter>.
  4. If still less than 2 MEG free you may need to back up some files then delete them from the hard drive.
  5. If the problem still occurs you may have a problem with the hard disk requiring replacement.
  6. Contact a computer technician.

ERROR MESSAGE "DESIGN NOT FOUND" WHEN RUNNING A DESIGN FROM DISK:

  1. Make sure you specified the correct path and file name when trying to run the design.
  2. Re-type the path and file name and try running the design again.

THERE ARE NO FILES LISTED WHEN YOU DO A DIRECTORY OF C:

  1. Exit the EDS program to DOS.
  2. You should be at the C:\EDS> prompt. If not type CD\EDS <Enter>.
  3. This will take you to the C:\EDS>. Type EDS <Enter>, then do another directory.
  4. You should always enter the EDS program from the C:\EDS> prompt to allow the program to start correctly.

ERROR MESSAGE "NOT MELCO ALPHABET" WHEN RUNNING LETTERING:

  1. This message indicates that an alphabet has been installed that is not coded to your system serial number.
  2. Re-install the alphabet from your alphabet disk. Verify the serial number on the alphabet disk matches your EDS serial number.
  3. To install the alphabet exit EDS to a DOS prompt. Type in A: <enter>. Install <enter>.

ERROR MESSAGE "ALPHABET FILE NOT FOUND" WHEN RUNNING LETTERING:

  1. The .alp file for the alphabet you selected is not in the \eds\alpha directory.
  2. Re-install the alphabet from the original alphabet diskette and try running the alphabet again.
  3. To install the alphabet exit EDS to a DOS prompt. Type in A: <enter>. Install <enter>.
  4. If you cannot find the original alphabet diskette call your distributor for a replacement.

ERROR MESSAGE "FORMAT FAILED" WHEN FORMATTING 3.5" MELCO DISKETTES:

  1. Verify that the diskette being formatted is a double-sided double density diskette. High density diskettes should not be used for Melco format and will not format in newer computers that have high density diskette drives.
  2. The disk controller must be capable of formatting a Melco diskette. The technical specification states that the controller card for the floppy diskette must be capable of formatting a 3.5" diskette single sided single density. If you are unsure if your controller meets this specification contact you computer supplier for further assistance.
  3. If the computer has the Melco EDS3 program installed there may be interference between EDS and the IXPORT.EXE program that is automatically loaded into memory when the computer is started.

"ERROR 1001" WHEN INSTALLING AN EDS OPTION DISK:

  1. This error indicates a serial number mismatch between your system and the option diskette.
  2. If you have a Keymake disk install it.

"ERROR 1002" WHEN INSTALLING AN EDS OPTION DISK:

  1. This error means the option has already been installed.

UNUSUAL DISK FORMAT PROBLEMS:

  1. If running both EDS and EDS3 programs on the same computer, its possible IXPORT.EXE (a terminate and stay resident program required for EDS3) may be conflicting with EDS.
  2. Format the disk in EDS3 or DOS.

'RUN SETUP' ERROR WHEN BOOTING UP COMPUTER:

  1. Reboot the computer.
  2. While booting the computer hit the DEL or whatever key your computer tells you to run CMOS SETUP.
  3. In CMOS SETUP specify what type of drives and display the computer has.

ERROR - "DESTINATION UNIT "X" NOT AVAILABLE" WHEN SENDING DESIGNS:

  1. If you are trying to send a design to the peripheral make sure the peripheral is on line with the EDS program.
  2. Check the unit number in the embroidery machine. You can do this by Reconfiguring the machine.
  3. To Reconfigure turn the machine off. Hold down the ALT, up arrow and down arrow keys on the machine keyboard and turn it on. It will show the machine type. If correct press enter. If not press the up arrow until it is correct. Press enter. Change the unit number if needed.
  4. If you are editing and the message appears when regenerating turn off AutoSend in the peripheral menu.

PERIPHERAL NOT ONLINE IN EDS:

  1. Press the F10 (Peripheral) key from the Main Menu.
  2. Look for the cursor to be scanning between unit 1 and 16 on the right hand side of the screen.
  3. Press the <Right Arrow> and then use the <Up> and <Down> keys to highlight the number that corresponds to the Unit Number the peripheral is configured for.
  4. Press F1 (Enable) and the peripheral should come ONLINE.
  5. If cursor is not scanning, there is a Com2 conflict in the computer. Disable Com2.

EDS2 LOCKS UP COMPUTER WHEN POWERING UP PERIPHERAL:

  1. Reset computer to the C:\EDS> prompt, then type: Del *.PFD <Enter>
  2. Del *.ASD <Enter>
  3. CHKDSK/F <Enter>, and if asked to convert lost chains to Files respond No.

CANNOT SEND A DESIGN TO THE PERIPHERALS OR ONLY PART OF THE DESIGN SEWS ON THE PERIPHERAL:

  1. If the entire design is not sent to the peripheral the hard drive is probably full and the ASD file could not be written.
  2. Check that there is at least 2 MEG of free hard drive space left on the computer.
  3. If less than 2 MEG free follow the instructions for "Unable to Start EDS".
