Needle Depth Check/Adjustment

Setting needle depth is one of the basic operator adjustments required to achieve good sewing quality. The needle depth setting is the relationship between the eye of the needle and the hook when the needle is at its lowest point. Because of the wide range of acceptable needle types, the distance between the blunt end and the eye of the needle may vary enough to cause missed stitches or cut threads if the needle depth is not absolutely correct. Follow these steps to adjust the needle depth:

  1. Remove the needle case cover from the needle case
  2. Remove the center table section from the peripheral
  3. Remove the bobbin case from the rotary hook assembly
  4. Press the [ALT][Ü]keys to move to needle #1 (except EMC 1 and ADV 18)
  5. Press the [MENU] key until the LCD displays: HEAD TIMING MENU
  6. Press the [ENTER] key and the LCD will display: HEAD TIMING ON
  7. Press the [ALT][Ý] keys and the LCD will display: GO TO HEADUP
  8. Press the [ALT][Ü] keys and the LCD will display: ONE REVOLUTION
  9. Press the [ALT][ß] keys and the LCD will display: NEEDLE DEPTH. This moves the needle to its lowest point as shown in Figure 3-2

Figure 3-2

  1. Look directly into the hook to compare the needle's position to the illustrations in Figure 3-3.

Figure 3-3

If the eye of the needle is within the limits shown in the illustrations, then your needle bar setting is correct and no adjustments are required. You may skip steps 11 through 21 and move to the next needle.

Figure 3-4

If the needle's eye is not in the acceptable range, adjust it as described here:

  1. Remove the needle case lower cover. Refer to Figure 3-4
  2. Use a 2.5mm hex driver to loosen the needle bar connecting stud
  3. Slide the needle bar up or down until you can see 1/2 of the needle's eye in the bobbin cavity. If you twisted the needle bar, return it to its original rotation before continuing.
  4. Hold the needle bar in place and retighten the needle bar clamp screw
  5. Press the[ALT][Þ] keys and the LCD will display: HOOK TIMING
  6. Press the [Þ] key and the LCD will display: 10 STEPS FORWARD. Press the [Þ] 8 times for a total of 80 steps
  7. Loosen the upper dead stop clamp screw (shown in Figure 3-4)
  8. Press the [Þ] key one more time. This will place the sewing head in the full needle up position
  9. Slide the clampup firmly against the upper stop, and tighten the upper dead stop clamp screw
  10. Press the [ALT][Ý] keys to rotate the sewing head to headup
  11. Confirm that the the needle's position is within the range shown in Figure 3-3
  12. Move to the next needle and repeat steps 7 through 10
