Checking Hook Timing
- Install a new needle so that the needle/hook point positioning can be
better evaluated
- Remove the table insert and bobbin case, if not already removed
- Remove the two screws that secure the needle plate and lift the needle
plate
NOTE: For EMC 6MLT units you must turn the power OFF, then remove the front
bed cover, followed by the needle plate, then unplug the ribbon connector.
Wrap a piece of tape around the exposed end of the connector before turning
the power back on.
- Press the [ALT][Ü] keys to move to needle #1 (except EMC 1 and ADV 18)
- Press the [MENU] key until the LCD displays: HEAD TIMING MENU
- Press the [ENTER] key and the LCD will display: HEAD TIMING ON
- Press the [ALT][Ü] keys and the LCD will display: ONE REVOLUTION
- Press the [ALT][ß] keys and the LCD will display: NEEDLE DEPTH
This moves the needle to its lowest point.

- Press the [ALT][Þ] keys and the LCD will display: HOOK POSITION
The hook point, as shown in Figure 3-8, should have a gap between it and
the needle approximately the thickness of the thread being used. The gap can
be checked by positioning a length of sewing thread below the hook, between it
and the needle. Lift the thread slowly by both ends. It should pass through
the gap between the needle and the hook, just slightly catching between the
two. If the gap needs to be adjusted, hook timing may also be required.
Figure 3-8
The hook point should also be directly behind the needle within about 1/2
the thickness of the needle as shown in Figure 3-7. If this is not the case,
the hook timing must be adjusted.
