Adjusting Hook Timing

Hook timing may be adjusted wrong if the needle depth is incorrect, so always check the needle depth first. The following steps presume that the rotary hook is installed in the approximate position for sewing. Refer to Figures 3-10 and 3-11. If you have not already done so, remove the needle plate and the bobbin case.

Figure 3-10 Figure 3-11

You may occasionally remove the hook to clear away a birdsnest of thread or for some other reason. When the hook assembly has been removed, slide it back on the shaft in the approximate position for sewing and tighten one of the screws. Attach the UTC so that its retaining tab is holding the inner basket of the hook assembly.

  1. Press the [ALT][Ý] key to go to Head Up.
  2. Press the [ALT][ß] keys to go to Needle Depth.
  3. Press the [ALT][Þ] keys to go to Hook Timing.
  4. Grasp the needle clamp and manually pull down the needle.
  5. Loosen the last screw.
  6. UTC-equiped peripherals only: check to make certain the UTC retaining tab is still securing the inner basket of the rotary hook as shown in Figures 3-12 and 3-13. If the inner basket moves, it could cause a broken needle or a damaged hook.

Figure 3-12

  1. Position the hook directly behind the needle. The indentation for the UTC retaining tab should be directly in front of the needle. Hold the hook in this position.

Figure 3-13

  1. Slide the hook assembly forward or backward until you have a gap about the thickness of a thread between it and the needle as described earlier. Maintain the hook position behind the needle as you do this. You may have to tighten one of the screws slightly and check the gap a few times before it is correct
  2. When the gap is correct, tighten all the screws. You can press the [Þ] key to move the rotary hook to make the screws more accessible. It is easy for the hook position to slip, so tighten the screws slowly
  3. Press [ALT][Ý] to go to Head Up
  4. Press [ALT][Ü] to go to One Revolution
  5. Press [ALT][ß] to go to Needle Depth
  6. Press [ALT][Þ] to go to Hook Timing
  7. Check all your adjustments and repeat any if necessary
  8. Replace the needle plate, making sure the needle is centered in the needle plate hole. Press the [Ý] key to move the needle down through the hole one step at a time. When the needle is centered, tighten the needle plate completely
  9. Replace the needle plate, making certain that the needle is centered in the needle plate hole. When the needle is centered, tighten the plate completely
